My walk around Cambourne today - enjoying the early (meteorological) spring sunshine - gave me cause to reflect on how fortunate we are to have access to the open countryside and the health benefits it brings.
We all know the merits of healthy-eating, doing exercise and looking after your body, but it's often easy to overlook the simple pleasure of an hour spent in the open air.
Mental Health: Research shows that exposure to nature can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. For instance, spending just 20 minutes in a park has been found to improve mood and well-being. Nature also helps regulate the sympathetic nervous system, which can lower blood pressure and heart rate, stimulating relaxation.
Physical Health: Being outdoors encourages physical activity, which is great for cardiovascular health. Additionally, exposure to sunlight boosts vitamin D levels, which supports bone health and immunity.
Cognitive Benefits: Time in green spaces has been linked to improved memory, focus, and creativity. Being outdoors isolates us from many of the day-to-day stresses that weight down us.
Connection with Nature: Developing a strong connection with nature enhances overall happiness and emotional well-being. Even the least strenuous of outdoor activities helps prevent muscular problems.
Massage has its place in any treatment regime, but, as they say, prevention is better than cure ! Get out there a reap the benefits of fresh air.
